UK Single Trade Window (STW) — what it is and current status (2026)

The UK Single Trade Window (STW) is intended to be a single submission point for border data — instead of entering the same information into multiple systems, a trader submits it once, in one place. Important: development of the STW for 2025-26 has been paused, and the first release will not go live in this financial year. Drawing on gov.uk materials, we explain below what the STW is, how it is intended to work, and what this means for businesses trading with the UK. Information current as at 2026-06-02.

What is the Single Trade Window

The Single Trade Window is — as defined by the World Customs Organisation — a single point at which parties involved in trade and transport submit standardised data and documents to satisfy import, export and transit requirements. The STW is intended to be the gateway between businesses and UK border systems.

How it is meant to work — "once, in one place"

The central idea: you submit your border data once, through a single portal, without having to re-enter the same information into different systems. This is designed to reduce administrative burden and data duplication.

Who it affects

The STW will be available to importers and exporters, customs agents and intermediaries, hauliers and other parties involved in moving goods across the UK border.

STW and CDS — is CDS going away?

No. CDS (Customs Declaration Service) remains the permanent border system. The STW does not replace CDS — it is an overlay or gateway through which data can be collected and forwarded to the appropriate systems and authorities.

Current status (important)

Development of the STW service for financial year 2025-26 has been paused — the first strategic release of functionality will not go live this year. Existing processes (CDS, GVMS, S&S) therefore remain in force. Treat the STW as a direction of travel, not a current requirement.

What this means for businesses

For now: nothing changes — process clearances through CDS and GVMS as before. Looking ahead: the STW may simplify reporting in the future, but monitor gov.uk announcements as timelines keep shifting. Do not invest in STW integrations until HMRC confirms delivery dates.

Checklist

  • Continue operating on CDS/GVMS — the STW is not yet required.
  • Monitor gov.uk announcements on the STW (status: paused 2025-26).
  • Do not purchase STW integrations speculatively.

FAQ

Is the STW live yet?
No — development for 2025-26 has been paused; the first release will not go live in this financial year.

Will the STW replace CDS?
No. CDS remains. The STW is a gateway for submitting data "once, in one place".

What should I do now?
Continue using CDS/GVMS and monitor gov.uk.
