Portsmouth ferry routes: compare the actual booking

The Portsmouth International Port ferry overview lists services to Caen, Cherbourg, St Malo and Bilbao, among other destinations. Consult the ferry operator for the current timetable, fares, departure and arrival points, freight arrangements and any restrictions for the actual consignment.

• Caen: confirm the arrival terminal, sailing time and onward transport for the actual booking.
• Cherbourg: check the booked freight service and the onward journey in France.
• St Malo: confirm the service and onward route for the actual shipment.
• Bilbao: check the operator’s current service and the onward journey in Spain.

When comparing Portsmouth with Dover, the Channel Tunnel or another route, use the actual booking, delivery location, freight restrictions and timetable. Allow for border checks and release requirements. Do not assume that one route guarantees fewer inspections, lower costs or a shorter customs-clearance time.

• Technology and aerospace: confirm the product specifications, consignee requirements and relevant documents. For temporary movements, check whether a carnet or another arrangement is appropriate rather than assuming that every aerospace shipment requires an ATA Carnet.
• Electronics and IT components: prepare accurate descriptions and check applicable conformity, marking and information requirements for the destination. GB and EU market requirements need their own checks.

Import and export cargo: product-specific preparation

For a RoRo or other freight booking, confirm that the carrier and terminal can accept the goods in the proposed form. Product-specific checks remain separate from the transport booking and customs declaration.

• Cars and vans: confirm vehicle identification, ownership or transaction records, the intended destination and the requirements for the actual import or export. For movements involving France, Germany or the Benelux countries, check the requirements for the actual destination.
• Industrial machinery: heavy machinery, presses and production equipment are cargo examples. Check dimensions, weight, classification and relevant technical documents; confirm whether a transit procedure is appropriate for the movement.
• Electronics and spare parts: accurately describe IT components, medical devices and machinery parts, and check the relevant product-specific requirements.
• Dangerous goods: identify the substance, classification, packaging and relevant transport documents. Check the road and sea legs separately with the carrier, including ADR requirements where applicable, and confirm acceptance conditions before booking.
• Agrifood goods: meat, dairy products and fruit are cargo examples. Check the product and risk category, country, destination and any required certificates, notifications and point-of-entry arrangements. Polish hauliers: prepare the actual UK–France movement

Confirm the customs procedure separately from the fact that goods travel in a heavy goods vehicle (HGV).

For a journey departing Great Britain for France, check the UK export formalities and any separate exit safety and security requirements. Check the French import or transit formalities and EU entry safety and security requirements separately. An ENS for entry into Great Britain is a different filing from an EU entry declaration. • Prepare declarations and records: identify the exporter, importer and transporter, the goods and the procedure for each leg. Confirm the required references and who will prepare or submit each declaration. For a GB-bound journey, check the GB import declaration and any required S&S GB ENS, including waivers and transport-mode responsibilities.
• Allow for checks: follow any customs or border inspection instructions for the actual consignment. Do not plan on an inspection being waived because of the chosen port.
• Confirm ferry boarding: follow the carrier’s freight booking, document, vehicle or trailer and loading instructions. Confirm how the goods will be carried and the relevant cut-off times.
• Prepare the French arrival: confirm the import or transit documents, applicable entry requirements and who will complete the formalities. Agree onward collection or delivery arrangements subject to release and any checks.

For a delivery that depends on precise timing, agree the actual filing, boarding, arrival and onward-delivery plan with the responsible parties. Keep allowance for required checks and changes to the booked service; no route-based saving or clearance-time guarantee is established here.

Customs procedures and support enquiries

• RoRo / ferry import: check the import declaration, product records and any inspection requirements for the actual vehicles, machinery or other goods. See the GB import checklist.
• RoRo / ferry export: check the export declaration, goods controls and any separate exit requirements. For relevant movements through GVMS locations, confirm whether a GMR is needed for the actual route. GMR means Goods Movement Reference; see the GVMS guidance.
• ENS (Entry Summary Declaration): check whether an ENS is required for entry into Great Britain, whether a waiver applies, the responsible party for the transport mode and the filing deadline. EU entry requirements are separate. See the S&S GB filing guidance.
• Transit and temporary movements: common transit and ATA Carnets are separate arrangements. Check the appropriate transit status for the actual route using the NCTS and common-transit guidance. For samples, service machinery or exhibition equipment moving temporarily, check eligibility and issuing and destination requirements for a carnet or another arrangement. The UK-issued ATA Carnet guidance concerns eligible UK exports intended to return.
• SPS documentation: check the actual food, plant or animal product, risk category and route for any required certificates, notifications and entry checks. Do not assume the same requirements apply to every product.
• HMRC enquiries or representation: identify any request for records, inspection or representation in relation to the actual consignment. Ask the proposed provider to confirm the work it can undertake and any required authority before proceeding.
