But in practical, everyday trade with the UK, does AEO status actually provide any benefit, or is it just a prestigious certificate on the wall?

Types of AEO

1. AEOC (Customs) – Customs facilitation (less frequent checks, faster procedures). 2. AEOS (Security) – Security facilitation (for the supply chain, important in logistics). 3. AEO F (Full) – Combination of both (most common).

AEO benefits in trade with the UK

Post-Brexit, AEO status has gained importance as the EU and UK mutually recognise their AEO statuses (Mutual Recognition).

1. Fewer checks (Red Lanes)

Risk analysis systems (both Polish AES and British GVMS/CDS) punktują firmy AEO. Przesyłka od firmy AEO ma statystycznie lower chance of being selected for inspectionIf the standard is 2% inspections, for AEO it may be 0.5%. Fewer inspections = faster delivery.

2. Priority service

If your vehicle is selected for inspection, as an AEO you have priority. In theory, customs officers should process your transport before others.

3. Approval of recognised places and simplified procedures

AEO status is not required to obtain permission for "approved premises" (clearance at your own warehouse), but it makes the process much easier. The authority assumes that a company that has passed the AEO audit can also be trusted in other customs matters.

4. Reduction of customs guarantee

This is a tangible financial benefit. For special procedures (e.g., customs warehouse, VAT deferral on import under procedure 33a), you must provide financial security. Holding AEO allows you to apply for reduction of guarantee to 30% or even 0%. This releases significant company financial resources.

Is AEO for everyone?

The AEO acquisition process (KAS audit) is long and arduous.

  • Duration: 6-12 months.
  • Requires: financial, IT systems, warehouse security (cameras, access procedures) audits, and even background checks on key employees.
For a small trading company: Usually not worth the effort. The cost of preparing procedures exceeds the benefits of fewer inspections. For a large manufacturing/logistics company: Essential. Without AEO, guarantee costs and downtime risks are too high.

AEO and Fast Lane

Many think AEO is a separate lane on the Dover motorway. Unfortunately, there are no physical lanes for AEO. Everyone is stuck in the same queue. The AEO benefit works "virtually" – in the computer system that decides whether the barrier lifts or directs the vehicle to a side parking area.

Summary

AEO status is an insurance policy for supply chain continuity.

  • If you do 5 clearances per month – it’s not worth it.
  • If you handle 500 clearances monthly – AEO is essential for peace of mind.

At easyclearance.pl we support companies in preparing for AEO audits if their business scale requires it.
