Frequently asked questions — UK border
What is a GMR and does the driver need to carry it? expand_more
A GMR (Goods Movement Reference) is the reference number required to board a ferry or Eurotunnel service bound for the UK. Without a GMR the carrier will not be loaded onto the ferry. The GMR is generated by the freight forwarder or customs agent once the ENS has been submitted. The driver must have the GMR number (QR code or reference number) when entering the terminal.
What is ENS and who must submit it before entering the UK? expand_more
ENS (Entry Summary Declaration) is the safety and security declaration that must be lodged before goods arrive in the UK. It must be submitted at least 2 hours before loading onto the ferry or Eurotunnel. It is filed by the carrier or a customs agent acting on their behalf — not by the driver personally. The indicative cost is £25–50.
What should a driver do if stopped for a customs inspection at the UK border? expand_more
During a customs examination the driver should: remain calm, present all cab documents (CMR, commercial invoice, packing list, customs declaration MRN, passport), not open the trailer without an officer's instruction, and contact the customs agent immediately on +44 7404 091503 (Easy Clearance, available 24/7).
